A Short History of GreenBy3

GreenBy3 is creating a mind shift in construction project management with its focus on collaboration, coordination and sustainability. GreenBy3 was founded by Jorge Riano in Charleston, S.C., in 2008. GreenBy3’s extensive experience in computer technology, facilities management and sustainability helps companies to be smart, sustainable, creative and well-represented as they build their new office building or renovate existing work space.

About Jorge Riano, founder and owner

headshot-jorge2Jorge Riano was born in Cuba, immigrating with his family to the United States as a young child. He grew up in Texas and Florida and became interested in computers while studying at Florida State University.

Over the years, Jorge worked in the technology industry as an engineer for major corporations such as: Delta Air Lines, Holiday Inn Worldwide, AT&T Network Services, Coca-Cola Corporate, BellSouth, Georgia Baptist Medical Center and Automated Trading Desk.

Jorge’s expertise in computer technology guided his professional experiences and resulted in a deep expertise in facilities management, as well as IT.

In 2001, while serving as the IT Team Leader at Automated Trading Desk in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Jorge was asked to oversee the design and construction of ATD’s new high-tech 68,000-square-foot mission critical facility, complete with its own data center.

Jorge served as the “owner’s representative” during the two-year design/construction process and went on to become Director of Facilities of the 22-acre site when the building was complete.

A key to the success of the ATD project was Jorge’s approach to the design and construction process. He didn’t just serve as the owner’s representative; he was a liaison between the client and the general contractor, architect, and other parties involved in design and construction. Jorge moved his office onsite. He communicated daily with various members of the construction team and established a regular dialog between team members. This led to more coordination and collaboration, which fostered creativity, especially when it came to troubleshooting and introducing new methods to accomplish a goal. Ultimately, this approach produced a better product for ATD.

About GreenBy3

After the success of the ATD project, Jorge was inspired to start his own business and created GreenBy3. He wanted to provide services and resources that would help clients with the process of designing and constructing their buildings. He especially wanted to provide project oversight on a day-to-day basis so clients could stay focused on their business.

Jorge also wanted to make a difference with regard to the environment. He reclaimed building materials and put them to use on client projects, where appropriate. This not only diverts usable products from the landfill, it also gives new life and an interesting story to a project.

As GreenBy3 evolved, Jorge’s coordination, collaboration and focus on sustainability have become key elements that set GreenBy3 apart. In fact, these three words are so crucial to the success of a construction project, they have become our new catchphrase: Collaboration > Coordination > Sustainability. This critical combination also means we’re helping break new ground for clients in more ways than one.

For example, in an industry that has generally operated in a fragmented fashion, the introduction of coordination and collaboration from the beginning leads to a better end result for the client. Creativity throughout the process is important, as well, whether it’s troubleshooting or simply brainstorming a new way of doing something. Any client will tell you GreenBy3’s staff thinks outside the box. And with our access to reclaimed materials, GreenBy3 not only adds creativity to your project, we also offer you an alternative to standard materials and help keep usable materials out of the landfill.

In addition to GreenBy3’s commitment to clients, we are committed to giving back to the community. For example, GreenBy3 donates services and reclaimed materials to nonprofits and other organizations for their building needs.
